About product

The design for this dining table was inspired by mathematics. Each leg, even though it is carved into a complex twisted shape, is essentially straight and identical to all the others.

Together, they form a hyperboloid — a very strong 3D shape that has been used architecturally since the late 1800s, when it was pioneered by the Russian architect Vladimir Shukhov. The concept had been on our mind for a while and just needed the right exhibition to kick-start the project.

The legs, of Ziricote, were modelled on the computer and then shaped with our CNC machine. Even with this level of technological input, it was still a challenge to make the faying surfaces — none of them flat — mate up perfectly.

The top is toughened, low-iron glass, which we decided to use to allow a good view of all the interesting features of the underframe. The top is located on the legs via elliptical stainless steel caps glued to the glass, which fit into sockets in the top of the legs.
