I have been making furniture for nearly 25 years, since graduating with a fine art degree from Sheffield Hallam University. My training in sculpture has influenced a lot of my work since, and as well as traditional cabinet making I have become known for my unique curved work and creative approach to designing in wood.
Over many years I learned the craft of hardwood joinery and the challenges of working with hardwood timber, and my work developed and matured – from a preoccupation with form I began to explore the material itself. The challenge I now find myself more and more engaged with is to create pieces that celebrate the tension between the inherent qualities of the materials and the final form of the work. My work aims to be beautiful, useful and sustainable.
Based in Sheffield, I work alongside Oli Brereton and Hazel Drummond to transform local hardwoods and reclaimed timber into chairs and tables, wardrobes and cabinets, display cases and shelving.
In 2023 I also launched a three-day table-making course, which I teach from my workshop.
