Legacy by Design was established in 2019 by Richard Ellis, who brings over four decades of experience in furniture making. After a substantial career as a clinical scientist, Richard returned to his original passion, dedicating himself fully to the craft of furniture design.
Richard honed his craftmanship and design skills as a member of the Blackhorse workshop collective before opening his own design studio. His work is strongly influenced by art, science, and the everyday objects that surround us, resulting in sculptural furniture that highlights the distinctive qualities and inherent beauty of each piece of wood.
Richard sources his materials responsibly, favouring sustainable native hardwoods with well-documented provenance, often working with distinctive species such as London plane. While he mainly works with private clients, he also creates bespoke pieces for architects and interior designers, typically for residential spaces.
